For years, Cyclopentasiloxane (D5) was a go-to silicone for formulators thanks to its exceptional sensory profile. However, due to growing environmental concerns, D5 has been restricted under European REACH Regulation because of its persistence and bioaccumulation potential in the environment.
To meet the industry’s need for high-performing, silicone-free alternatives, IMCD developed Smart C5 - a next-generation emollient blend designed to replicate the sensory and functional properties of D5 without the regulatory drawbacks.

The science behind Smart C5
To identify the optimal replacement, we cross-referenced key physicochemical parameters (chain length, polarity, volatility, viscosity, and melting point) of a wide selection of emollients from our portfolio with their predicted performance during application.
By evaluating these emollients’ spreadability, diffusion into the skin, and sensory feel (from light to rich), we fine-tuned a synergistic blend that replicates D5’s behaviour in formulation: Smart C5.
